This program is designed to maximize the interactions and mutual benefits of participating interns and the faculty in the Department of Medicine, through two distinct but interdependent components.

Learning component

This is the initial component where interns meet with faculty and business operations stakeholders to learn their processes and existing support systems in great depth, to understand and relate to the practical issues, problems, shortcomings of existing processes and systems, to identify pain points, bottlenecks and assess as potential opportunities for system improvement.

Hands-on Component

Following the learning and discovery stage, interns will proceed to meet with the in-house development team to further assess feasibility of the development plans, decide whether or not to work on new developments. Pre-selected development projects are always available as backups. Once projects are selected, interns will leverage in-house resources to start and complete the development.

In-house Resources

The projects to be worked on are actual with real-world consequences and impacts to department operations. Therefore, compliance, data privacy, and security are paramount in the development and final applications. The in-house resources are provided to ensure such restrictions and compliances.

Expectations of Outcomes

All work and production from this program are properties of the Stanford University and belong to the operations of department of medicine. A minimally working prototype of the application is expected at the conclusion of the internship. A demo day will be the capstone of all developments and applications to conclude the program.
